A few years ago I started filming videos of my young kids to record their development and forward on to family members. I do the same with microcars . If you like what you see here why not subscribe? I span the gaps in automotive culture. Call me a purveyor of anything oddly interesting and mechaincal. Anything automotive related, especially orphaned or shunned heaps...they should get just as much love as a concours trailer queens. hahaha..
I Let My Garage Rot and Fall Over
My neighbor was not happy. I'm not sure how old the garage was, but it finally fell over. It took 11 months to rebuild it. I had some help. We had to re-use the front wall to appease the city. It turned out great !

Spent all day upgrading the fuel system, still fuel starves, I pushed it into the park. Could it simply be vapor lock? maybe.

Fix your mess
Who picked the music???
That's good stuff too, YES, there is a LOT to be said for rebuilding an existing structure - especially when it comes especially to 'current' city ordinances!! WISE choice.
Looks inviting! awesome.
Well, you were prepared for the inevitable! Can't wait to see if a vented cap is the fix!
7:06 "tune up" song by the dramatics .
As much a we cuss the electronics of modern vehicles, old fully mechanical systems could be quirky, touchy and require more attention to maintain for optimum use.
Small little channel? You almost have a hundred thousand subscribers!
Nothing like having your dog with you when the fuel pump goes out. Happened to me when the orginal pump "left the chat" two and a half miles from home. Had the car towed. Petey the Studio Monster enjoyed the walk home much more than I did.
Why anyone would think this would work is beyond me. Good content though
😁
Runs like a song!
Correction, it has the equivalent of 330,000 miles. 😉
Stella is best dog on the interwebs :-) :dog2
What a pretty car! I never realized how small they are until now
Maybe Im being greedy but I could watch another hour or two of this . Thank You for another entertaining video.
Glad you enjoyed it
Drill a very tiny hole in the center of the cap?
I love your Nash Rambler!
I was thinking it was the gas cap not venting.
Wat a fabulous nash I bet you're proud of it lovely colour too Mark 😅
I also like your oddball collection of cars - not enough to ever want to own any of them now, but I remember seeing cars like the Isetta and Nash when they came into my dad's shop when I was a kid. I was fascinated with all cars and when I was 16 I became the owner of a 1962 VW Standard Bus that had a '66 1300 Beetle engine. I was looking at $100 and $200 cars, but I wasn't finding any cars at that price point that were even partially road worthy. Some could be driven, but just barely. Most were on their last legs, clapped out and likely headed to the junkyard. Some had running engines but bad transmissions, some had barely running engines with unknown transmissions - I stepped up and paid $475 for the Bus because it was the first cheap car I found that could be driven 60-65 mph on the highway. I learned all about mechanics, spending many hours of labor keeping the Bus alive. One psi sounds suspiciously low. I know that you will figure it out. If the fuel pump eccentric is so worn that you needed a booster on the pump arm, I might guess that there is so little of the fuel pump lobe left on the camshaft that it can't keep up with the fuel demands at higher speeds and in higher gears.
Thats cool. I like that.
had that happen on my riding mower the vent in the gas cap got plugged
In the early 70's a co-worker had a Hillman Minx, and installed a locking gas-tank cap. Apparently the new cap was not venting, and over time, with the mechanical fuel pump pulling gas out of the tank, a vacuum was created, and the tank collapsed inward ! I mentioned the vented gas cap in yesterday's comments. Trinidad & Tobago. Wrst Indies.
Enjoy 👍
Hope you get this sorted, it's awful when you can't trust a car.
Usual to remove the pump and work the lever manually. Pump lobe could be worn but that would be unusual even after all these years. Back to basic diagnosis I think. I know 6v batteries can be "slow" but that one sounds exhausted. Carb should be OK at 2.5psi I think. Bubbles in the filter not good. Maybe a tiny leak in the line somewhere.
😂😂😂Jesus. Whi do dat?..instead of mounting a iron plate..and an electric pump😂😂😂
Outstanding
You are not the first person to have been caught out by that problem! I had exactly the same situation with my 1958 Ford Prefect. I’d fitted a locking cap from a different vehicle, forgetting that the Prefect required a vented cap. The Nash looks stunning by the way. We had the Nash/Austin Metropolitan here in the UK, which looked very similar to your car, but smaller.
Don't mention the catalytic converter advantage. I was working in the auto industry when it was released. It's only function was to capture particulates before they reached the air. In other words, it was supposed to stop dirt particles from coming out in exhaust. Just to pacify people worrying about smog clouds. It is completely unable to turn CO into CO2. It would kill you with carbon monoxide poisoning. You need an exhaust hose leading outside on all your cars. We've been gaslighted for decades about the function of the catalytic converter.
Thank you. I love and appreciate all your videos and odd ball cars, have been enjoying them for at least 6 years now.
Fixed the spark but now no oil pressure. Out of the fire and into the frying pan. Here's hoping the distributor drive is actually compatible!
Weirdo
After all the fussing with the fuel pump(s) and it was a gas cap? A bummer. Symptoms of it falling flat in 3rd WOT could have been made worse due to the loose carb, intake leak making a lean condition but that's not the reason for the bowl not getting fuel but just confusing to diagnose.
i knew it wasnt the pump. just guessing. i thought it was float. vent does make sense.
oh yes, they do use a Vented cap, well that tells you you dont have any leaks, and, are you sure the cam lobe is wore off?
My very first car was a 1981 Honda Accord. Silver exterior and red interior - just like the video. I also had sheepskin seat covers - oh ya!! I loved that car!!
Happy birthday Stella. Shes so smart.❤
Ethanol fuel loves to eat the rubber inside mechanical fuel pumps; added to some abysmal quality fuel pumps being manufactured lately that just don’t last long and, sometimes, are even bad right out of the box! I have to agree with others … it’s time for a 12 volt upgrade! It has become an automatic upgrade to all my pre 1967 VWs. I don’t even waste time and money restoring the six volts electrical systems on them; they just go bye-bye! The cost of a six volt battery plus the lack of “easy to obtain in an emergency situation” electrical components just makes trying to live with six volts on a driver quality car impractical and unrealistic. Listening to that 6 volt starter on the Nash just makes me cringe on every video I hear it in. I wouldn’t trust it to ever restart and leave me stranded somewhere at the most inopportune times. Also agree that once you go Pertronix, the idea of going back to points and condensers will seem unthinkable! With the ever increasing cost of points and condensers, I just looked at it as every eighth to tenth set of points and condensers I have to buy for a car would have paid for the Pertronix module and high output coil! It becomes a no brainer really fast! Yes, some people will argue that Nash knew what they were doing back when they put together that six volt system and it should be left alone. I would argue that around the same time the Nash 6 volt electrical system was being made, psychologist believed that lobotomies were a practical treatment for mental illness! Point being, times change and better solutions come along to solve problems! Why not take advantage of them so you can enjoy driving your old classics with improved performance?
Might want to upgrade to a 12VDC system while you're at it... because that's what every electric fuel pump I've ever seen offered--including a basic diaphragm-style replacement for mechanical pumps--operates on. That, and it'll make your starter push harder, making your engine spin-over easier and quickening start-up. Not to mention how your ignition will produce a higher secondary voltage, resulting in easier starts and improved general engine performance... at which point, I like to suggest: Get a Pertronix ignition system. It'll all stay hidden under the distributor cap, and you'll never worry about adjusting points again... except on that dated voltage regulator. But, if you've already upgraded to a negative ground 12VDC system, you'll probably have also upgraded to a GM/Delco 10SI or 12SI internally regulated alternator charging system, which will render the external point-gap type regulator moot, anyways.
Looks like Stella has lost her winter coat? If that is true, I wonder what the house might look like.
Maybe a piece of old sludge or something plugged the pick up in the tank ? I had that happen once and had to flush my tank several times to fix it on a car i had years ago.
Those pumps are easy and cheap on eBay.
Mark have you checked the engine breather crankcase ventilation? I have many old English cars of that era and earlier. The mechanical pump diaphragm has to overcome vacuum in the engine crankcase on one motion of the pump cycle. If the vacuum is too high, the diaphragm can't return to repeat the cycle..
Hi Mark! I love the NASHs. Especially the Nash of 1949 Ambassador 2 door you repaired long time ago. This was how I found your great channel. I'm one of those who hate to alter original techs. Please keep the ignition system with points and 6 volt! Same for the pump. Some wrote already that it might be something in your carburator or gas tank. Also I recommend that you put 1% of the tankvolume/ gas qty you buy, of two stroke oil. The newer gas/petrol/benzine is too dry. Jay Leno does this too. With my Dyane of 1967 it works fine. My fuel pump is also a mechanical one. Works also fine. I had a dirty gas tank which i cleaned before I drove my Dyane. Same for the carb. I tested how long my points last (newly made in france by TROUVE FRANCE) - around 12'000Km I had the same like you, that in high gear she stottered slighly. I was the tungsten contactplates/points who were done/ burned up. Quite normal, and I think a good mileage. VW Beetle newly made points last only 3'000Km because it's chinese stuff. The fibre part which gets on the cam is often too bad. In the true day this was made of pertinax - cottonwool and bakelite. Perhaps you should check the points. The filter looked still full ? (gas was there) GREAT car! Thank you for sharing your experiences with us! Kind regards! Gereon
during an EMP and nuclear fall out you will be happy to have a car with classic points and mech. fuel pump!
Is the tank properly vented ? The fuel pumps in the British cars had two check valves about the size of a nickel at the suction and discharge. But first you have to check if gasoline is coming on the line from the tank. Man ! That is a side-valve engine..........a giant Briggs & Stratton ! Trinidad & Tobago. West Indies.
Land Bruiser!
wonder why all of a sudden it wont get fuel. maybe float?wouldnt think it would be pump again.
I put Honda 600 fuel pumps on a lot of my cars through the years: 1962 International Hamms Beer Truck, '40 Nash Lafayette (sold today), Wife's '55 Powell truck, various Honda S600s.
I love and appreciate your work. It has great value in these times. I think the problem is not the fuel pump. It may be necessary to clean the fuel lines and check the carburetor.
